T
he Mediterranean diet
is one of the healthiest diets in the world. What is the "Mediterranean" diet?
There's no one "Mediterranean" diet. At least 16 countries border the Mediterranean
Seaand diets vary between these countries and also between regions. Many differences in culture, ethnic background, religion, economy
and agricultural production result in different diets. But the common Mediterranean
dietary pattern has these characteristics:
- high consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables grown locally
- bread and other cereals, potatoes, beans, nuts and seeds
- olive oil is an important monounsaturated fat source
- dairy products, fish and poultry are consumed in low to moderate
amounts and little red meat is eaten
- eggs are consumed zero to four times a week
- wine is consumed in low to moderate amounts
More than half the fat calories in a Mediterranean diet come
from monounsaturated fats (mainly from olive oil). Monounsaturated fat doesn't
raise blood cholesterol levels the way saturated fat does. The incidence of
heart disease in Mediterranean countries is lower than in North America. Death
rates are lower, too. Eating red meat sparingly seems to also increase health. There
is a general consensus among health professionals that the Mediterranean Diet
is healthier than the North European and American diet because more grains,
such as spaghetti, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and olive oil are consumed.
Recent research has now provided firm proof that a Mediterranean
diet, which includes olive oil, is not only generally healthy, but that consuming
olive oil can actually help lower harmful LDL cholesterol. Olive oil contains
antioxidants that discourage artery clogging and chronic diseases, including
cancer.
We are so fortunate to live in supernatural British Columbia where there is
a bounty of locally raised meats and foul as well as excellent fresh produce
in season. Being close to the ocean affords a rich selection of seafoods especially
salmon and halibut during the summer. For local residents and visitors of
Victoria I welcome you to some taste sensations. Please contact me to plan some meals for you.
